A common N/A modification for the M54 engines is to remove the catalytic manifolds and replace for earlier M52/M52TU versions. An often overlooked portion of the mod is a new pair of gaskets for the downpipe flanges. These gaskets are a composite material with a built-in fire ring. Unlike cheaper all-metal replacements, these gaskets can and often do last for over 20 years.
